Barriers to SI: Can they be overcome?
Social innovation is about new solutions that simultaneously meet a social need and enhance society’s capacity to act. Therefore, novelty is not enough. There must be a social purpose and the innovation has to lead to societal changes. This means going beyond individual interests and working for the common good. It also means being able to engage the collective action of many people and many organisations until changes in society are achieved. If both of these things were easy, social innovation would be easy, but they are not.. However, difficult is not the same thing as impossible.. Every day, around the world, many people work for the common good looking for ways to be effective in this endeavour. Every day many people are aware that they cannot act alone, but have to engage with other people around them. It is through the actions of these people that barriers to social innovation are overcome.
